The conference theme encompasses three topics, modular representations, modular invariant theory, and modular Lie algebras. The unifying motif of these three areas is that here we encounter enthralling phenomena and challenging problems, which are impossible in characteristic zero. A finite group may have infinitely many indecomposable representations, there is no Reynolds operator, if the characteristic divides the group order, and not every simple Lie algebra comes as a tangent algebra of an algebraic group scheme. However, it is only in positive characteristic that one can define such important concepts as a block or a defect group. The Frobenius automorphism can be used for constructing polynomial invariants and equips an algebraic Lie algebra with a p-operation, which is a very powerful tool in the representation theory. One of the goals of the conference is to bring together specialists working in these three neighboring areas. We are planning to have talks reviewing the general background in the fields and presenting recent progress in them.
